The short-staffing from one staff member with many early years of staff nursing has changed so much that no wonder nurses won't stay anymore. When a manager is told this, they should act on it. It's really sad those who want to push new employees out should find another job. Even if they don't know this staff member has worked both roles of management and staff. Nursing for the reason we most got into it.to care for another as we would want our loved ones to be cared for. Numerous patients needing to be boarded in the ED due to no floor staff. Night shift med/surge and step down 1:7/8 with charge fully in count. Day shift med/surg and step down ratios 1:6/7 with charge RN fully in count. Hardly ever have time to take a break or chart. Management and administration are essentially absent and unsupportive, but will place enormous emphasis on “being positive” while they continue to demand more and more from the RN and expand patient ratios with sicker and sicker patients. Constant pressuring of staff to pick up extra shifts. Recent announcement from administration about possibility of implementing a “no caps” on nurse-to-patient ratios policy in the near future. Increasingly unsafe patient ratios with no improvement in sight. This includes a multitude of responsibilities that could and should be completed by the hospitalists, case managers, housekeeping, management, ancillary staff, etc. Culture is very “the nurse will do it” in that an inappropriate amount of tasks are expected to be performed by the nurse, which frequently interferes with direct patient care. Very few staff RNs as many have left in droves. ![]()
